Missing link won’t reopen till Christmas

Regular walkers along Warkworth’s waterfront will have to wait until the end of the year before they can use the path under the bridge in Elizabeth Street.

The walkway was damaged in last year’s Auckland Anniversary storms and were closed for most of last year. Acting area manager (Rodney) Angie Bennett says it is estimated the walkway will be finished by Christmas, depending on the outcome of the investigation and design phase of the project.

“Due to the location of the walkway, there is a substantial amount of planning and design work required,” Bennett says. “The area is of ecological significance and environmental considerations will be factored into the project.”

Planned work includes the removal of the timber boardwalk within the fenced area, and rebuilding the timber boardwalk and associated retaining structures.

The Rodney Local Board has approved a budget of $650,000 for the project.
